Description
Generic Name: Metformin Hydrochloride
Cidophage contains Metformin Hydrochloride, an oral antidiabetic medication used to manage type 2 diabetes. It works primarily by decreasing glucose production in the liver, reducing glucose absorption from the intestines, and improving insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues. This helps to lower blood sugar levels and improve glycemic control.
Indications & Uses
- Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Management of type 2 diabetes, particularly in overweight patients, when diet and exercise alone do not provide adequate glycemic control. It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin.
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Off-label use for improving insulin resistance and associated symptoms in women with PCOS.
Dosage & Administration
- Usual Dosage: The typical starting dose for adults is 500 mg once or twice daily, taken with or after meals. The dose can be gradually increased by a healthcare professional to a maximum of 2000 mg to 2500 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. For extended-release formulations, the dosage regimen may differ.
- Method of Administration: Take the tablet orally with a glass of water, preferably with or after meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew.
